North Carolina
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools (CMPS)
CMS is the second-largest school district in North Carolina, serving over 140,000 students. More than 60% of CMS students are from minority backgrounds, with Black students comprising 36% and Latino students 28%. Additionally, nearly 50% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating significant economic challenges.
North Carolina has historically had lower youth voter turnout, making early civic education in CMS schools a crucial step in fostering long-term engagement.
This historic, vibrant city is full of opportunities we are eager to help CMS students explore as a part of our curriculum and experiential learning.

DCPS serve approximately 50,000 students, with African American and Latino students comprising 65% and 19%, respectively. DCPS students face one of the highest child poverty rates in the country, impacting access to extracurricular educational opportunities.
As the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. offers a unique and opportune environment for civic learning, making it an ideal location for our program’s pilot that will serve as a flagship experience we are excited to lead. By engaging students at an early age, Star Spangled Scholars ensures they are not just learning about democracy in textbooks, but actively participating in their community and civic life.

Virginia
Richmond Public Schools (RPS)
RPS serves approximately 22,000 students, with Black students comprising over 70% of the district's enrollment. The district faces one of the highest poverty rates in Virginia, with over 66% of students from low-income families.
Historically, Richmond has struggled with low youth voter participation, making it an important location for early civic education. Being the state capital of Virginia, and the city’s rich history in civil rights and democracy, provides a meaningful and important backdrop for engaging students in civic leadership and participation.
We are excited to work with RPS as a pilot school district to further our mission and help activate civic pride and responsibility in the next generation!
