Is Star Spangled Scholars a partisan organization?
Star Spangled Scholars is a 501(c)(3) non-partisan organization and follows all state and federal laws and regulations. The program is committed to providing unbiased civics education and does not endorse any political party or candidate.
What is the International Democracy Day experience?
As part of the program, select students will travel to Greece and Taiwan to learn about democracy in an international context. They will meet with local students, visit historical sites, and participate in discussions about global governance and civic responsibility.
Are there any competitions or events for students?
Yes! Students will participate in mock Civics Bee competitions, public speaking exercises, and debate tournaments to build confidence, reinforce learning, and prepare for the Annual Civics Bee in Washington, D.C.
How is Star Spangled Scholars funded?
Star Spangled Scholars is currently funded by one individual donor, but is actively seeking new donors and grants from philanthropic organizations. Expanding funding sources will help the program grow and reach more students in need of quality civics education.
What kind of community engagement projects do students participate in?
Students take part in voter registration drives, town hall meetings, local government initiatives, and service-learning projects that connect classroom learning to real-world civic participation. These activities help students develop leadership skills and a sense of civic duty.
What topics are covered in the civics education curriculum?
Students will learn about U.S. government structure, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, civic responsibilities, and the electoral process. The curriculum also includes public speaking, debate training, and hands-on civic engagement activities.
How does the mentorship program work?
Each student is paired with a college mentor majoring in political science or a related field. Mentors provide academic support, career guidance, and insights into civic engagement through one-on-one meetings, group discussions, and project collaborations.
