Origins of the Democratic Party (1800s)

The Democratic Party traces its roots back to Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic-Republican Party, which opposed the strong federal government policies of the Federalists in the late 18th century. By the 1820s, the party split, and Andrew Jackson emerged as the leader of the modern Democratic Party, officially founded in 1828.
